Team Chicago successfully finished their first mission to Tanzania, completing 63 life-changing surgeries in just a week in the East African country. While at the hospital, the team was also able to donate seven duffel bags of toys to children in need from a local nearby orphanage.
Team Chicago's time in Tanzania included several complicated surgeries, including a facial tumor removal completed by longtime Operation International team member and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Fernando Almas that allowed one patient to see out of both eyes again. The team, founded in 2019 by Dr. Edie Chan, also tackled hernia repairs and cleft lip repairs.
