In 2009 the Team Kids travelled to Peru where they performed 64 complex pediatric surgeries. The infant seen in this picture is a newborn who was born with a life threatening congenital defect called transesophageal fistula ( TEF) . Normally in the US this would be considered a high risk life saving surgery, but in this part of Peru most babies will not have the opportunity for this type of surgery. Luckily our OI kids surgeon Dr. Victor Valda and our team were able to save this baby after 6 hours of intense surgery and post operative care.
